Remember that there will be 2 tests for this unit: a written test, and a listening test.

The written test will be on Thursday, February 19, and the listening test will be on Friday, February 20. We will be reviewing and listening to more examples on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday will be a team-based review game. You will be playing for candy...may the best team win!

Electronic Music

When we discussed electronic music, the examples I played for you were VERY easily identified as electronic, as they exclusively used computer and other electronic noises. Using the internet, find at least 2 examples of electronic music that appeal to you. Youtube would be a good starting place for your search. Post the following info as a comment:

Film/TV Soundtrack

Using the internet, look up the soundtrack for 2 of your favorite movies. If you can find examples, listen to clips from the soundtrack on itunes, youtube, or another site. Please post responses to the following:

Rock and Metal

So, we've been talking about early rock and roll, which then progressed in different directions, developed into various forms pop rock, some of which then morphed into heavy metal. We listened to some examples in class. Can you name other examples of early rock and roll, pop rock, and heavy metal that were not discussed in class?

Okay, we discussed this in class... here's your chance to see if you were paying attention. Tomorrow I will ask you all to write down the definition of the word improvisation. If you get it totally right, you will get a bonus point. You should have the definition in your notes... if not, look it up or call a friend...I'm not posting it here...I mean, do I have to do everything?

Most of you were very good about identifying the different styles as a form of jazz, but had more trouble when you were trying to differentiate between the different types. If you were taking a listening test, what would you listen for to tell the difference between:

Opera, Classical Symphony, Broadway Musical

We are learning about some styles of music that many of your have not experienced before. Please comment on one of the following:

1. Why opera developed in the first place, and why opera singers needed to develop such strong voices

2. When doing a listening test, how to differentiate (tell the difference) between classical symphony, opera, and broadway musical.

When I ask you in class this week what the word differentiate means, you all better know!!

Folk Music

We learned that folk music is the earliest type of music, and that each culture has developed their own folk songs. Using the internet, find the names of folk songs from 3 different countries and post them as a comment. But post soon and read the other students' comments, because if they list a song, you are not allowed to repeat it!! (Don't forget to list both the song name and what country it is from.)
